About This Special Issue
Sustainability as a result of the implementation of plan, policies, and programs [PPP] demonstrates the commitment of different stakeholders for the responsible exploitation and use of resources and development of projects and organizations aiming for an integrated and balanced interpretation of the social, economic and environmental pillars of sustainable development.
As the variety of stakeholders groups become more aware of the social, economic, and environmental impacts due to the disturbance of the natural environment, public and private organizations are finding themselves in need for the development of integrated and balanced approaches to measure the progress made towards sustainability and the effectiveness of the strategies linking the PPP at the macro level with project level’s processes and procedures while meeting the stakeholders’ needs. The focus of this Special Issue includes the advances made towards measuring sustainability and each of its pillars. In the past 30 years, advances have been made in each pillar regarding the identification, assessment and mitigation of impacts; however, such progress varies among the social, economic, and environmental pillars. Additionally, sustainability as an integrated force demands for the implementation of assessment methodologies that consider the interconnectivity and dynamism of these three pillars instead of treating them as an isolated component area of knowledge.
